Five strings lie in grooves round the rings, tuned like a five-string kantele, here D minor: D4 E4 F4 G4 A4. As on a kantele, the lowest string is the farthest from you; the nearest is the highest.
Easier ways to play: the five round pads at the bottom (one per string, in its colour; the pad for the next note lights up), the keys 1 to 5 or A S D F G (a focused pad also plays with Enter or Space), and Easy under Options on the start card, where only the timing counts: a press in time on any string plays the note the tune expects. A press anywhere near the strings plays the nearest one.
Play: notes lie on the strings further along the ring and the ride brings them to you. Pluck the string as its note crosses the bar of light. A hit flares, a missed note fades; the score shows at the end.
Tutorial (on at first): three short steps before the first tune, each said in large type; the first step also passes with all five strings played on the pads or keys. Switch it off under Options on the start card.
Layers (in free play): press Record a layer and play; one loop of two bars at the chosen tempo is recorded and then repeats. Record more over it, up to four, to build a piece; tap a layer number to mute it, Clear to start again. A soft click marks the beats while recording, and the small ring on the button shows where the loop is.
Play freely: swipe across the strings to strum, tap one to pluck it. Listen plays the chosen tune; Play along lights the next string and waits for you. Hold the room keeps what is ringing in the room.
The mist behind takes the light of what you play: the strings, the bar, the notes riding in.
Both tunes are archive versions from Ilmari Krohn's collection Suomen Kansan Sävelmiä, digitised by the University of Jyväskylä: Vaka vanha Väinämöinen, a runo song from Uhtua in White Karelia, 1877 (A. Lähteenkorva; Runosävelmät II, p. 183), and Tuu tuu tupakkirulla from Akaa, 1910 (Saarela). Both move on the first five notes of the minor scale, so a whole tone lower they fit the five strings exactly.
Finale ride (under Options on the start card): when a tune ends, the camera leaves the rings, glides along the wave of the T and comes back before the score. A tap or a key skips it.
Stop ends the tune and goes back to the start card. Sound stops with Sound off, the Escape key, by scrolling the stage away or by leaving the tab.
